On this day, 29 June, 1907...

As part of my blog, I will be periodically be doing a short 'On this day' article featuring a member of the Sarson family.

On this day, 29 June, in 1907, Valentine Sarson married Maud Knight at the parish church of St Paul's on Kirby Road in Leicester, Leicestershire, England [1]

Their marriage is recorded as below [2] :

St Paul's Church in Leicester is now a redundant church sadly with the congregation having moved to a modern worship centre in 2003. The foundation stone was laid on 18 May 1870 and the church was consecrated on 1 November 1871.

On this day, 18 June, in 1892...

As part of my blog, I will be periodically be doing a short 'On this day' article featuring a member of the Sarson family.

On this day, 18 June, in 1892, Frederick Rodney Sarson was baptised at Christ Church Watney Street, Tower Hamlets, London, England, to William, a Foreman Carpenter, and Margaret Sophia Sarson, of 17 Bromhead Road. Below is a transcript of the entry of his baptism [1].

We are fortunate to have the date when he was born also recorded on his baptism record. A search of the birth index on the General Register Office website returns an entry for Frederick Rodney Sarson in the September Quarter of 1892 in the Portsea Island registration district, which is in the county of Hampshire on the south coast of England. His mother's maiden name is given as Morgan [2]

Sadly, Christ Church Watney Street was destroyed by a land mine on 16 April 1941 and the building stood in ruins for some years before the site was cleared. In 1968, the site was redeveloped and Winterton House was built, a 25 storey high-rise containing 138 flats. To find out more, you can visit the St George in the East website which has an interesting section about the history of Christ Church Watney Street.
